Rare's version of the Donkey Kong universe became a huge success and eventually overshadowed the original Nintendo version.
Nintendo contracted the British video game developer Rare (known at the time as Rareware) to create a reimagining of the original arcade game, which would bring the titular gorilla back into the limelight after nearly a decade of absence (though canonically, the Donkey Kong you play as is different from the original, and the original Donkey Kong is the older and aptly named Cranky Kong). and faded into history after a few sequels. While the original Donkey Kong helped establish Nintendo as the video game company it is today, the series was pushed out of importance by Super Mario Bros.
Released in 1994 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Donkey Kong Country introduced the groundbreaking technique of using pre-rendered 3D graphics in a 2D console game and marked the final decisive milestone in the early-to-mid '90s console war between the Sega Genesis and SNES, with the latter emerging in the lead in the west.
